123 A RARE 18TH-CENTURY WATCH-FORM PEDOMETER BY SPENCER & PERKINS with 1¾in. enamel main dial for step counting signed SPENCER & PERKINS LONDON, subdivided with two further dials for miles and dozens of miles, each with blued-steel hands, the mechanism set within a gilt brass case and operated by a tilting rod numbered '1351' terminating in a waistband hook 8½in. (22cm.) long Spencer & Perkins were makers of watches between 1765 and 1806 from 44 Snow Hill, London. They are also known to have sold waywisers so the lot offered is a logical progression for them. When hooked over the waistband of a pair of breeches, the mechanism is progressed by the upward movement of the thigh which rocks the whole instrument forwards and backwards. £500-800

132 A TWO-DAY MARINE CHRONOMETER BY JOSEPH SEWELL FOR THE HALL LINE, CIRCA 1900 with 4in. silvered dial signed JOSEPH SEWELL / 61 So.Castle St. LIVERPOOL / Maker to the Admiralty and further engraved on securing bezel HALL LINE No. 97, numbered 5033 in up-down dial, subsidiary seconds dial cut away to reveal thirty-second electrical impulse contact, gold hour and minute hands, Earnshaw escapement with bi-metallic balance with blued steel spring, numbered on the movement and bowl '6099', mounted within in a gimballed bowl with locking arm in a two-tier mahogany box with electric slave dial contacts, Greek testing label from 1977 and retail label for Castle & Co., Hull 7in. (18cm.) square approximately Robert Alexander founded the Sun Shipping Co., a passenger/cargo service running out of Liverpool in 1868. The ships were all named _____HALL, thus, the company became known as the 'Hall Line'. In 1899 the name was officially changed to Hall Line Ltd. and in 1901 the company was purchased by John Ellerman operating as part of the Ellerman Group as Ellerman's Hall Line. This chronometer must therefore date from the brief period the Company was running independently between 1899 and 1901. £1000-1500

134 AN EARLY 20TH-CENTURY WOOD AND BRASS ROYAL NAVY BOAT 'CHETWYND-PATENT' COMPASS BY DENT with 4in. diameter card signed Kelvin Bottomley in liquid-filled bowl signed and numbered E. Dent & Co. Ltd, London No. 54360. Mounted within oak box of issue with candle lamp and accessories, numbered `3534' 13½in. (34.3cm.) high In 1890 the Royal Navy invited four compass manufacturers to compete for the tender to produce a new design of boat compass that would be suitable for both steam and sailing vessels. Tested aboard H.M.S. Vernon, the example produced by Dent (and known as Boats Compass Pattern 20) won the day and, apart from a slight reduction in card size, was used until after the Great War. The example offered here is post 1907 when the card size was reduced by ½in. £1000-1500

139 A WELL-PRESENTED SAILORWORK WATERLINE MODEL OF THE THREE-MASTED BARQUE JOHN WESLEY, CIRCA 1867 with carved and painted hull, simple fittings, wood and cloth 'helmsman' and full suit of shaped and painted tin sails, mounted in a raised and painted seascape within glazed case with painted cloud backboard, model lighthouse off starboard bow and name plate 25 x 33½ x 12½in. (63.5 x 85 x 32cm.) Built by Alexander Hall & Sons for the London Missionary Society in 1867, the John Wesley was originally a 238 ton composite barque but was later re-rigged as the three-masted barque depicted in this model. For over thirteen years she served the Society's many South Pacific island missions. Eventually hulked in 1899, she sank in 1903. £700-900
