[M] A STATIC DISPLAY MODEL FOR THE S.V. MAIN, ORIGINALLY BUILT BY RUSSELL OF GREENOCK FOR J. NOURSE, 1884, THE HULL MODELLED ABOARD MAIN CIRCA 1909 AND COMPLETED BY R.A. WILSON, C.1972

A STATIC DISPLAY MODEL FOR THE S.V. MAIN, ORIGINALLY BUILT BY RUSSELL OF GREENOCK FOR J. NOURSE, 1884, THE HULL MODELLED ABOARD MAIN CIRCA 1909 AND COMPLETED BY R.A. WILSON, C.1972

the 15in. carved hull plated with paper and painted, the varnished decks with painted fittings, deck house and covered boats on chocks, painted masts with standing and running rigging and yards, mounted within glazed case -- 14½ x 24 x 7¼in. (37 x 61 x 18.5cm.)

It's understood this model was largely re-built and restored by R.A. Wilson, circa 1972 using a hull that was probably made aboard the Main around 1909 by a sailor who gave it, unfinished, to one Hans De Mierre. De Mierre wrote 'The Long Voyage' about his time aboard Main and it suggests that the hull was made aboard the Main between 1905 and 1909 by one of the able seamen: "Before getting down into the boat, he leaned on his elbows and called over to me "Goodbye Long'un, you'll find that model in my bunk!" before the words had sunk in, or I could say thank you. he had gone! I ran forward and in the half light of the deserted forecastle found the model disassembled and packed in a box, and I was delighted!" De Mierre never did anything with it and passed it to Robert (Bob) Wilson to complete.
