A 2nd Class Cruiser launched in 1890 at Newcastle, Sybille was stationed in South Africa. In January 1901 she was ordered to Lambert's Bay to support the army in their efforts to prevent Boer irregulars attacking Cape Colony. During the evening of the 15th, the weather deteriorated and, to prevent her running ashore, her acting Commander, Lt. Hubert Holland, took her out to sea to ride out the storm. Returning to the anchorage early in the morning of the 16th, Sybille struck a reef and stuck fast. Although all but one member of the crew was rescued, the ship quickly became a total loss.
