"I take the liberty of communicating to you, for the information of his Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, that I fell in with the enemy's squadron on the 12th instant, the Rosses bearing S.S.W. five leagues, and after an action which continued most of the day, four of their ships struck their colours...". Official account of the defeat of the Brest Squadron, by Sir John Borlase Warren, from H.M.S. Canada, on the 18th of October, 1798.
