Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (1650 - 1707) rose through the ranks of the navy and became a popular British hero after fighting in many of the important battles of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. His celebrated career came to an end in a disastrous shipwreck in the Isles of Scilly. He also served as MP for Rochester, Kent from 1695 until his death.

George Lee: wide margins, a few soft creases and occasional rubbing. Chaloner Ogle by Robert Tims: trimmed to, or inside the platemark on all sides. Chaloner Ogle by V. Verdlon: trimmed on, or within the platemark, light-staining, one short tear in the lower left image. Chaloner Ogle by J. Faber after G. Zinke: narrow margins, surface dirt, slight paper skinning and remains of adhesive glue on the upper edge on the reverse. Edward Vernon: wide margins, occasional spotting and light-staining. Thomas Hardy: trimmed within the platemark on all sides, surface dirt and pale light-staining. John Jennings: thread margins, mounted on a paper support. Henry Wedley: wide margins, pale, even light-staining.
