Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, 1st Bart (1722 - 1796) served as an officer of the British Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) and the American War of Independence (1775-1783). From 1764-68 he was Governor and Commander in Chief of Newfoundland. Palliser came into a famous dispute with Admiral Augustus Keppel over the Battle of Ushant in 1778. However, after being court-martialled he was acquitted.

Condition Report
Charles Stewart: thread margins, spotting. Charles Wager (three quarter-length portrait): thread margins, a horizontal crease in the upper image, mounted onto paper support. Charles Wager (half-length portrait): thread margins on three sides, trimmed within the platemark on the lower side, without loss of text, rubbing in the image and one small surface abrasion in the upper image. Richard Lestock: a few small, pale spots in the image, otherwise in good condition. Edward Hawke: thread margins on all sides. Thomas Smith: thread margins on the upper and lower edges, the other sides trimmed within the platemark, but outside the image. Thomas Griffin: wide margins, pale spotting within the image. George Pocock: wide margins with several short tears (one inside the image), an area of loss in the lower left sheet corner, and an area of damp-staining in the upper right image. The duplicate image of George Pocock: damp-staining and handling creases thoughout, and one tear inside the right image.
