An attractive seated portrait of the Arctic and Antarctic explorer James Clark Ross (1800-1862) in uniform. His arm rests upon a map of the Arctic, and a map of the south pole hangs on the wall behind. His achievements include the discovery of the Ross sea, Victoria Land and the volcanoes Mount Erebus and Mount Terror, named after the expedition's vessels. Ross's expedition mapped much of the Antarctic coastline and the Ross ice-shelf was named in his honour.

Napier: rubbing, browning and folded margins. Melville: minor marginal tears. Seymour: overall browning and two scratches to the lower image. The bookplate portraits are of: Augustus Keppel; Edward Hawke (with a duplicate); Sir James Saumarez; Lord Viscount Exmouth; Sir Charles M. Pole (with a duplicate); Sir George Cockburn.
