Condition Report
William Sidney Smith: this is a proof plate with registration marks in the left margin. It has wide, uneven margins on all sides, with slight loss in the lower title, and an area of water-staining in the lower right sheet corner. Napoleon Bonaparte said of Smith (1764-1840) 'That man made me miss my destiny', having aided the Turks in their resistance to Napoleon in Egypt and the Levant. The Earl of St. Vincent: this has spotting throughout, and margins trimmed to the image, with slight loss within the title field. Edward Bruce: this has wide margins, with occasional pale spotting. Captain Forbes: this is a trial proof. It has wide margins, one repaired tear in the right margin, pale spotting, and slightly rubbed. Hyde Parker: this is a trial proof. It has wide margins with light-staining and water-staining along the lower sheet edge. Patrick Gibson: this is a proof. It has been trimmed to the plate-mark and has occasional pale spotting. John Stewart: this has wide margins with occasional pale spotting. Lord Hugh Seymour: this has narrow margins and unobtrusive, occasional spotting. James Vashon: on laid India paper on a wove paper support. It has wide margins on three sides. The lower edge has thread margins. There is some creasing in the lower right title-field, and creases, with some splitting, along the vertical platemarks. Possibly a later impression.
