[M] THE BATTLE OF AIX: 11th APRIL 1809

Admiral...

THE BATTLE OF AIX: 11th APRIL 1809

Admiral Lord Gambier reports the success of the attack on the French ships at the Basque Roads, in which four ships had been destroyed at their anchorage. Fire Vessels under the Command of Captain Lord Cochrane later reported that seven French ships were onshore and might be destroyed. Unfortunately Gambier was unable to effect their destruction.

The wind, being fresh from the Northward and the Flood Tide running rendered it too hazardous.

95cm. of column space on pages 1-3, in a complete issue of The London Gazette Extraordinary, dated the 21st of April, 1809.
