signed on the calibrated brass arm KNIGHT / Foster Lane / LONDON, the arms inscribed 'Direction' and 'Incl', each inset with spirit levels, the lower arm also with a ¾in. compass, the top with pin hole sights, contained within original stitched leather cased - 7in. (18cm.) overall; together with a brass-bound mahogany spirit level signed Marples & Sons, Sheffield, contained within a fitted box with sliding lid, c.1860 - 12¾in. (32.5cm.) diameter.
