BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1901-1904: A PACK OF PLAYING CARDS USED ABOARD THE DISCOVERY
comprising a set of 'Linen Finish' cards contained in original cardboard slip case, itself in a wooden sailor-made box -- 4in. (10cm.) high

Provenance: Frank Plumley archive, sold Messrs Sotheby's Sussex, 2-11 July, 2001.

Frank Plumley joined Discovery's crew as a blacksmith wheelwright. Actively employed in the Polar camp whilst the ship was icebound for twenty-three months he took part in sledging expeditions and hunts for seals. This lot is a typical product of an RN carpenter.
