a rare blue stoneware beer jug by W. T. Copeland & Sons, with glazed rope-work decoration flanking expedition transfer crest to front, the base inscribed DISCOVERY over maker's transfer mark (restored hairline crack to front) -- 9½in. (24cm.) high; together with a letter from Robert Copeland (consultant at Spode) dated 1993

For this expedition, led by Sir George Strong Nares, Copeland produced special services for both H.M. Ships Alert and Discovery, sent by the Admiralty in an attempt to reach the North Pole by way of Smith Sound, culminating in Commander Albert Hastings Markham's Farthest North of 83° 20'26"N (May 12, 1876), a record latitude at the time.
