A COMPREHENSIVE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF THE ANTARCTIC WHALING EXPEDITION OF THE SOUTHERN VENTURER, 1945-46

compiled by Robert James Hewer (b. 1909), containing over three hundred and twenty images of various sizes including interior views of the ship, studies of wildlife, ice flows and bergs, crew members working and relaxing, capturing and processing of whales both on-board ship and onshore, topographical views of Leith Harbour and Grytviken South Georgia, also included are related newspaper and magazine cuttings and other contemporary and later paper ephemera including a letter by Hewer to his mother addressed from “Southern Venturer. Still in the Ice 22nd January 1946" wherein he describes the ice and the wildlife, original cloth boards -- 16 x 12 ¾in. (41 x 32cm.)

Southern Venturer was built in 1945 by Furness Shipbuilding Co, Haverton Hill, Stockton-on-Tees, she made one voyage a year to the Antarctic to service the whale catchers and process the catch.
