[M] A VERY RARE FRENCH IVORY AND SILVER CRUCIFIX...
A VERY RARE FRENCH IVORY AND SILVER CRUCIFIX DIAL, POSSIBLY DIEPPE, CIRCA 1600
the outer surfaces incised with depictions of the crucifixion, and Mary holding the Christ Child flanked by cherubs, the sides divided for ante and post meridian hours, the inside containing a 7mm. glazed painted compass with needle, gilt painted latitude list on blue ground, engraved silver hinge at base with silver latitude scale and support, six ?reliquary compartments behind, the cross arms decorated with flowers, securing hook and suspension loop to top -- 2.5/8in. Apparently unsigned or marked for a maker, the distinctive French Royal Blue and gilt latitude list appears to only list French towns, and matches those on slightly later dials (see M. The unusual compartments behind the hinged silver latitude scale are recessed for (missing) glass covers and may have been intended for holy relics.

Estimated at £4,000 - £6,000
(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)
Condition Report
Some chipping along edges of hour scales; evidence of a retaining string (or string gnomon?) behind silver scale; latitude list partially obliterated - possibly deliberately.
