AN IVORY NUREMBURG STRING-GNOMON COMPASS SUNDIAL, CIRCA 1730
face 1a with depiction of a hound wearing a collar; 2b with later scratched doodles and possible maker's mark 'H*G'; face 1b with depiction of a rose, the edge calibrated for common hours comprising 6-12-6; face 2a with 1½in. compass bowl with etched steel needle, etched inside bowl with orientation of magnetic declination, the edge calibrated 4-12 and 1-8 - 3 x 2⅛?in. (7.5 x 5.5cm.)

The "maker's" mark used appears to be that for Johann Gebhart who was making dials in the 1550s. Another Gebhart dial with this distinctive H*G marking can be found in the Whipple Museum collection, No. 25.
