A STERN BOARD POSSIBLY FROM THE CADET TRAINING HULK SULTAN, CIRCA 1932
carved with a fouled anchor and crown cartouche within faux garter border inscribed SULTANA within a field of foliage with egg and dart frame -- 13 x 38in. (33 x 96.5cm.)
H.M.S. Sultan was a centre-battery ironclad launched in 1870. She was renamed H.M.S. Fisgard IV in 1906, but reverted to Sultan while a training hulk in 1932. She was scrapped in 1946. It seems likely this stern board was carved for the ship's cutter, a 'Sultana' being the wife of a Sultan.
