A PRESENTATION IVORY AND GOLD CIGARETTE BOX COMMEMORATING THE LAUNCH OF H.M. SUBMARINE 'P.39', 1941
the hinged lid inset with gold plaque inscribed Presented to Mrs MAYDON by the Chairman and Directors of Vickers-Armstrongs, LTD. at the launch of H.M. Submarine "P.39" 23rd August, 1941 -- 6¼in. (16cm.) diameter

A U-Class vessel, P39 was assigned to operate in the Mediterranean, based out of Malta as part of the 10th Flotilla Squadron. Damaged on patrol, she was in harbour when she was then further damaged by German bombers. Considered beyond repair, she was salvaged and beached at Kalkara in 1943, but badly damaged again by another air attack. Her crew were not much more fortunate and many were later lost aboard H.M.S. Olympus on their way home to the UK. P39 was finally broken up in 1954.
