ALEXANDER DAVISON: A JAPANESE NAGASAKI LACQUER CHEST, EDO PERIOD, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH-CENTURY
probably a 'Yoroi Bako' or armour box, with mother-of-pearl inlaid side panels and hinged lid with manuscript paper label applied inside reading: Alexr. Davison Esqr. / St. James's Square. (old wear, lid detached) -- 21½ x 18½ x 18½in. (54.5 x 47 x 47cm.)

Alexander Davison (1750-1829) was Nelson's long-established prize agent and friend. Apart from executing Nelson's estate after Trafalgar, Davison famously produced his medal for the Battle of the Nile which was issued to every man in metal according to rank, forty years before the Government somewhat begrudgingly produced a medal to acknowledge service in the Napoleonic Wars.
