H.M.S. ANSON (1940): AN EIGHT-SPOKE SHIP'S HELM
constructed in teak, bound in brass, the hub inscribed BROWN BROS & CO. LTD., ROSEBANK IRONWORKS, EDINBURGH, the back stamped 3038 with old paper label from Ship Breaking Industries Ltd as lain in port Chandon, Dumbartonshire, and another inscribed Wheelhouse ANSON, tied on spoke -- 43in. (109cm.); together with letter of provenance from Rolls Royce (the owners of John Brown & Co. Ltd) confirming provenance

H.M.S. Anson was a King George V-class battleship named after Admiral George Anson. Laid down at the Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend in 1937 and launched in 1940, she saw service in the Second World War escorting Russian convoys in the Arctic. After the war, she was the flagship for the 1st battle squadron of the British Pacific Fleet and was scrapped (along with her three sisters) in 1957.
