[M] A SILVER-MOUNTED 'VICTORY' TIMBER TABLE SNUFF...

A SILVER-MOUNTED 'VICTORY' TIMBER TABLE SNUFF BOX, EARLY 19TH-CENTURY
the lid inset with gold-framed white glass profile of Nelson after Tassie mounted on bloodstone, plain plaques to front and underside -- 3¾in. (9.5cm.) diameter

This box is of a type that closely matches others of similar proportions made in the immediate aftermath of Trafalgar from wood recovered in her refits initially at Gibraltar, and latterly at Portsmouth. The gold frame to the cameo and the silver base plate both with evidence of largely lost earlier engraving which may accord to a MS note inside box with the 'England Expects..' quote. A similar cameo profile of Nelson mounted on bloodstone is in the collection of the National Maritime Museum (JEW0287) and another example similarly mounted in a box is inscribed around the collar: 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY' (OBJ0199).

Estimated at £1,500 - £2,000

Condition Report
Plain plate to front has a hole in it corresponding with one in the wood behind - uncertain if this is a period repair, or an abortive attempt to fit a catch or lock; the base plate must be a later replacement as one would expect an owner's name or provenance.
