The famous Leviathan – or the ‘Levi Nathan’ as the U.S. merchant marine commonly called her – was launched as Hamburg-America’s Vaterland but seized by the U.S. authorities when the U.S.A. entered the Great War in 1917. Renamed and used initially as a troopship, she was reconditioned for passenger use in 1923 and remained in service until scrapped in 1938.
