A MID 19TH-CENTURY CARVED AND POLYCHROME BUST-LENGTH FIGUREHEAD FOR THE LORD RAGLAN / RAGLAN
carved from laminated wood, probably lime, and depicting Raglan in his military tunic with medals and decorations, terminating in a scrollwork flourish -- 30½in. (77.5cm.) high
No less than five possible candidates for the true vessel from which this head originates exist - as "Lord Raglan" the candidates are: William Nicholson & Son's 924 ton wooden sailing ship of 1854; Archibald Denny's 516 ton passenger/cargo ship of 1855, and Swan of Newcastle's 1,780 ton barque of 1856; and as "Raglan" Palmer's of Jarrow launched a 833 ton cargo ship in 1878; and another by the same yard of 1883 registered at 1,048 tons.
