the lid with 1½in. dry card compass in gimbals, signed around well Jenner & Knewstub 33 St. James's St. & 66 Jermyn St. with decorative gilt ropework borders -- 3½in. (9cm.) high
Jenner & Knewstub made and sold a wide range of luxury 'fancy' goods originally from just 33 St. James, but added the Jermyn St. address in 1862. They became a limited company in 1888 and were absorbed by A. Webster & Co. in 1890. The weighted base on this example strongly suggests it was intended for use at sea.
