by Gieves Ltd and comprising bi-corn, epaulettes and belting, contained within japanned case of issue; together with a treen ashtray made from the deck of H.M.S. Ajax, with presentation inscription from the ship's company for his command 1940-41; his framed Crossing the Line Certificate for 1943, a loose quantity of wartime press clippings for Ajax, and partially completed midshipman's log for his son J.D.B. McCarthy 1946 (a lot)
McCarthy took command of Ajax after her refit following the Battle of the River Plate (see lot 302) guided her through the Battle of Matapan (where she was hit by Junkers dive bombers) and the evacuation of Crete.
