A PRESENTATION COPPER BOARDROOM PICTURE OF THE RUSSIAN ARMOURED CRUISER RURIK (1908)
depicting the ship in a three-quarter profile within a copper frame with Cyrillic title and the Imperial Arms of Russia over, secured to original oak frame with egg and dart moulded edge for wall hanging -- overall measurements 25½x 35½in. (65 x 89cm.)

The Russian armoured cruiser Rurik was ordered in 1905 to replace the heavy losses incurred in the recent war with Japan. Launched in 1906, she was the last major warship to be constructed abroad. Built by Vickers, she displaced 15,433 tonnes (15,190 tons) and carried 20-4.7in, 8-8in and 4-10in. guns. Her magazines were fitted with rapid flooding equipment and drenching sprays - a feature unique to the Russian navy. Rurik was broken up in 1923.

Another example of this plaque was sold by Messrs. Christie's, South Kensington (Sale 8573, 11th November 1999, lot 9) suggesting that the Russians may have presented them to senior members of the board at Vickers upon completion.
