[M] A RARE 18TH-CENTURY WATCH-FORM PEDOMETER BY...

A RARE 18TH-CENTURY WATCH-FORM PEDOMETER BY SPENCER & PERKINS

with 1¾in. enamel main dial for step counting signed SPENCER & PERKINS LONDON, subdivided with two further dials for miles and dozens of miles, each with blued-steel hands, the mechanism set within a gilt brass case and operated by a tilting rod numbered '1351' terminating in a waistband hook

8½in. (22cm.) long

Spencer & Perkins were makers of watches between 1765 and 1806 from 44 Snow Hill, London. They are also known to have sold waywisers so the lot offered is a logical progression for them. When hooked over the waistband of a pair of breeches, the mechanism is progressed by the upward movement of the thigh which rocks the whole instrument forwards and backwards.

Sold for £558
Estimated at £500 - £800

(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)
