A TWO-DAY MARINE CHRONOMETER BY JOSEPH SEWELL FOR THE HALL LINE, CIRCA 1900

with 4in. silvered dial signed JOSEPH SEWELL / 61 So.Castle St. LIVERPOOL / Maker to the Admiralty and further engraved on securing bezel HALL LINE No. 97, numbered 5033 in up-down dial, subsidiary seconds dial cut away to reveal thirty-second electrical impulse contact, gold hour and minute hands, Earnshaw escapement with bi-metallic balance with blued steel spring, numbered on the movement and bowl '6099', mounted within in a gimballed bowl with locking arm in a two-tier mahogany box with electric slave dial contacts, Greek testing label from 1977 and retail label for Castle & Co., Hull

Robert Alexander founded the Sun Shipping Co., a passenger/cargo service running out of Liverpool in 1868. The ships were all named _____HALL, thus, the company became known as the 'Hall Line'. In 1899 the name was officially changed to Hall Line Ltd. and in 1901 the company was purchased by John Ellerman operating as part of the Ellerman Group as Ellerman's Hall Line. This chronometer must therefore date from the brief period the Company was running independently between 1899 and 1901.
