[M] A MID 19TH-CENTURY FOUNDER'S WOODEN SIGNAL GUN...

A MID 19TH-CENTURY FOUNDER'S WOODEN SIGNAL GUN TEMPLATE MODEL
turned from teak and comprising a 23in. four-stage barrel, cascabel and trunnions, solid muzzle with central arbor -- 26¾in. (68cm.) overall

Traditional gun casting methods used unique positive (or 'male') templates which were destroyed as part of the process. This later template was probably used to create the more modern boxed or split mould, so that after forming the hollow mould, this was split, being contained in two heavy iron boxes, to release the model or pattern for reuse. This saved time and money, since the model could be used repeatedly, and allowed identical sets to be produced. The central cone, which would have been created with this model, gives a founder a starting point to bore the barrel.

Sold for £496
Estimated at £400 - £600
