[M] A COMMEMORATIVE PRESENTATION ALBUM: 'A QUARTER...

A COMMEMORATIVE PRESENTATION ALBUM: 'A QUARTER OF A CENTURY'S WORK FOR THE BRITISH ADMIRALTY BY THE YARROW FIRM'
comprising thirty-one hand tinted 6½ x 10½in. photographs of torpedo boats between 1879 and 1900, colonial river gun boats, boilers etc.; one reproduced picture of an expedition arriving at 'Assouan' aboard Waterlily, and two unsigned watercolours depicting an aerial view of the yard at Scotstoun; and King Edward VII and party aboard a launch at Cowes in 1906, the page dividers printed with captions, gilt-edged card pages bound with silk-lined green full-calf boards with embossed gilt titles -- 12½ x 18in. (31.5 x 45.5cm.)

Founded by Sir Alfred Yarrow (1842-1932) in 1865, first at Poplar, then Cubitt Town, London, Yarrows competed directly with Chiswick-based Thornycroft and specialised in launches and torpedo boats. Moving out of London around the same time as their rivals, Yarrow settled in the then-green field site of Scotstoun, West Glasgow in 1906. This album was probably produced to celebrate that move and remind clients, in particular HMG, what had been achieved to date: Yarrow had not only built the Royal Navy's first destroyers (H.M.Ships Havock & Hornet, 1893), but had developed what became known as the the "Yarrow Boiler" to induce more speed, and which were also installed in R.M.S. Queen Mary and the LNER W1 Class of locomotive. Yarrow now form part of BAE Systems Surface Ships.

Sold for £992
Estimated at £800 - £1,200
