AN IVORY NUREMBERG POCKET DIPTYCH SUNDIAL BY MELCHIOR KARNER, CIRCA 1670
face 1a inscribed with a wind rose surrounding the face of the Sun; face 1b with plummet line, string gnomon attached and shadow lines; face 2a inset with glazed compass and needle and horary shadow lines; face 2b with Gregorian and Julian Epacts around a brass volvelle, with maker's mark '4' at low edge (string gnomon and glass later) -- 3 x 2in. (7.5 x 5cm.)

Melchior Karner (1642-1707) was one of a family of dial makers and used the '4' trademark between 1665 and 1700. The Epact tables for this transitional period between calendars was used to locate the date for Easter over a 19 year cycle.

Further to the catalogue description, in strong overall condition with no apparent warping, splitting etc. Compass needle may be a replacement, as is the glass and gnomon and plummet strings. Missing brass securing hook at back for holding top plate up.
