AN 18TH-CENTURY POCKET COMPASS
unsigned, 2½in. dial with blued-steel needle inscribed in gilt for 'N' and 'S', inscribed inside lid Sir Joseph Banks / Compass / use by him on / Captain Cooks / voyages -- 3in. (7.7cm.) diameter

Sold for £4,712
Estimated at £200 - £400

(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)

Condition Report
Needle has patches of rust; inscription worn; needle retention pivot and button missing (would have secured needle when lid was closed), paper card and wooden case in strong condition and retains securing hook.

Conforms to the type of pocket compass that was used at the time, and is a small, neat example; the inscription is old and now somewhat faded - as there is absolutely no supporting provenance to support it, the value is based purely on what the compass is worth as a compass.

We have no additional provenance to offer with this lot, and it must be bid on "as is".

We are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of this property. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Charles Miller Ltd is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD “AS IS” IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE.
