A LETTER REGARDING PRIZE MONEY FROM SIR CLOUDESLEY SHOVELL, 1674

to Mr John Butler ‘living in Crischurch Fryers near the Cross Keys London’, with the remains of two wax seals, confirming Mr. Samuel Butler and a large sum of money sent to him ‘for to be disposed of in my concerns according to his judgment’, sent ‘From Abord of ye Henrietta this 14 day of July 1674 -- 8½ x 6½in. (21 x 17cm.); together with an engraving after Michael Dahl (Swedish, 1659-1743), The Honourable Sir Cloudesley Shovell, Kt., published by John Hinton -- 6¼ x 3½in. (16 x 9cm.)

Sir Cloudesley Shovel (1650-1707), Naval Commander, in his early days fought largely and successfully against the Dutch. He served in the Mediterranean under Sir George Rooke and with him took Gibraltar in 1704. In 1705, he was made Rear Admiral and after an unsuccessful attempt to capture Barcelona began his homeward journey. On 22 October 1707, his ship struck a rock off the Scilly Islands and foundered with the loss of all hands. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.

additional engraving with 0.5 x 0.5cm layer removal, otherwise in good condition
