AN ADAPTED 30-HOUR POCKET CHRONOMETER BY JOHN ARNOLD, LONDON, CIRCA 1785
the 2¼in. enamel dial signed JOHN ARNOLD / LONDON / No.92, subsidiary seconds at 'VI', blued-steel hands, counter-signed on the gilt back plate John Arnold, London, Inv. et Fecit No.31/92, engraved balance cock with O Z balance, contained in brass case with domed top glass, now in fragment box adapted for use as a mantel mount (dial cracked, hands later, runs intermittently) -- 5 x 5in. (12.7 x 12.7cm.)

Originally conceived as a pocket chronometer, this watch was adapted early in its life, possibly by John Roger Arnold, and placed in a marine case with gimbal mounts, this in turn has been cut down and turned into a mantel clock. Purchased several years ago without a key, it has not been run for many years and will require a service.

Further to the catalogue description, the dial is cracked in several places. The instrument has later blued-steel hands and the instrument has not been run for a long time, although the movement runs for several seconds before arresting. It is understood not to have been serviced or wound for many years.
