the 4in. silvered dial signed and numbered Thomas Mercer Ltd/St. Albans England/11257, blued-steel hands, up-down and subsidiary second dials, counter stamped '11257' on back plate and inside bowl, Earnshaw escapement, mounted in gimbals within two-tier mahogany case with bevelled top glass and ivorine label inscribed and numbered Kelvin White & Hutton 5550 London, complete with guard box and invoice from Mercer's dated August 1946 for a repair; and a certificate from H. Browne Ltd for April 1946
This invoice describes the instrument as 'formerly K.W. & H 5550' suggesting the repair (which was over £5) was, in effect, a complete re-fit with new dial and number for Mercer's. The certificate from Browne's dated a few months earlier describes only KW&H with a daily plus rating of 2.5 seconds.
