ROBERT HOOD: HIS MIDSHIPMAN LOG FOR H.M.S. GLASGOW, 1814-15

kept by Midshipman Robert Hood between 29th September 1814 and 28th August 1815 on H.M.S. Glasgow, Captain the Hon. Henry Duncan. Largely cruising in the Channel. Extra illustrated with early watercolours by Hood showing Melpomene being attacked by the Danish gunboats; Sultan going through the Straits of Gibraltar; Glasgow beating into Brest; views of the French coast, and with a coloured chart of the French Atlantic coast -- 12 x 8in. (30 x 20cm.)

In 1819, Robert Hood (1797-1821) was appointed midshipman and official artist (together with George Back) to Captain John Franklin’s disastrous Coppermine expedition in North America during which he completed important new views of the flora, fauna and indigenous peoples of the Canadian arctic regions. On 21 October 1821, after surviving an overland trek in extreme hardship, Hood was murdered by a cannibalistic voyageur.
