[M] A 19TH-CENTURY RUHMKORFF-TYPE INDUCTION...
A 19TH-CENTURY RUHMKORFF-TYPE INDUCTION COIL
unsigned, constructed in wood and lacquered brass with leather-covered coil cylinder and open ivory and brass wheel-type switch, mounted on mahogany base -- 13½ x 16in. (34.5 x 40.5cm.)
Named after Heinrich Ruhmkorff (1803-77) this is a type of electrical transformer used to produce high-voltage pulses from a low-voltage direct current supply. To create the flux changes necessary to induce voltage in the secondary, the direct current in the primary is repeatedly interrupted by a vibrating mechanical contact called an interrupter. Developed at the beginning of 1836 by Nicholas Callan and others, the induction coil was the first type of transformer.
