A RARE EARLY 19TH-CENTURY MODEL FOR A BRIGHTON HOG-BOAT
with black-painted clinker hull, paint to frames, the buoy stencilled B102, rudder, planked decks and fittings including covered hatches, coiled ropes, anchor, Venetian red bulwarks, capstan, two masts with stitched linen sails, yards and rigging, mounted on two brass columns within glazed wooden case -- overall measurements 17¼ x 25½ x 9½in. (44 x 65 x 24cm.)

Brighton hog-boats (or 'hoggies'), were common fishing boats of the South Coast between Eastbourne and Shoreham during the 18th and 19th Centuries, and usually had lee boards fitted. Gradually replaced by two-masted luggers, no original examples are believed to exist.
