A BUILDER'S BOARDROOM MODEL FOR THE LOGISTIC SUPPORT SHIP S.N.V. AL MUNASSIR, BUILT BY BROOKE MARINE LTD, LOWESTOFT, UK, FOR THE SULTANATE OF OMAN, 1979
with laminated and carved wooden hull finished in red, grey and black, with twin propeller shaft and rudders, superstructure with painted fittings including deck rails, ventilation shafts, balustrades, life buoys, quick release life rafts, bridge landing craft, quick firing guns, communication turret with radar lamps, range finder, bridge with binnacle over, funnel stack with crest, crane on slide, flight deck with helicopter and other details, mounted on two brass columns within Plexiglas display base with builder's plate -- overall measurements 15½ x 41 x 11in. (39 x 104 x 28cm.)
A sturdy all-rounder, the 3,000 ton Al Munassir had a crew of 45 (plus space for 188 troops) and was able to carry 550 tons of cargo - or eight heavy tanks, which could be unloaded via a bow ramp. The crane was able to lift 16 tons and the heli-pad suitable for a Westland Sea King machine. Her Sperry Sea Archer optical fire system made her a suitable command vessel. Placed in reserve by 1995, she was sunk as an artificial reef in 2003 and is popular with divers.
