THE SHIP'S BELL FROM THE S.S. MERA, 1882

cast in bell metal and inscribed in inset lettering as per title, complete with clapper and secured to iron bar with arm and lanyard behind, loosely mounted on wooden stand, the bell – 10 x 10in. (25.5 x 25.5cm.); the stand – 15 x 18 x 17in. (38 x 46 x 43cm.)

Mera was a 228-ton single-cylinder cargo ship built by William Allsup & Son's, Preston for J. Sinclair. She was wrecked off the Minquiers Rock, Channel Islands on the 19th February 1887 in water ballast between Granville and Cardiff. The Master, Mate, two engineers and a crew of eight were saved, landing in Southampton on the 24th of February.
