A FINE AND DETAILED BUILDER'S DOCKYARD MODEL OF THE ELLERMAN LINES S.S. CITY OF ADELAIDE BUILT BY GRAY OF SUNDERLAND, 1920
the laminated and carved hull with lined, painted deck replete with detailed gilt fittings, superstructure, masts and davits as appropriate, mounted on two turned supports within glazed display case with plates (cleaning and conservation to model, later case and plate). Overall measurements - 30 x 71¼ x 20in. (76 x 181 x 51cm.)

The second of three City of Adelaides built for the Ellerman Line (the first had been completed in April 1917 and lasted a little over a year before being torpedoed and sunk) was to enjoy an almost normal career before suffering a similar fate. Completed in November 1920, and at 6,589 tons almost 2,000 tons lighter than her forebear, she served for 24 years on routine passenger/cargo work. She was nine days out of Karachi bound for Freemantle in ballast when, on the 30th March 1944, she came under attack by both torpedo and gunfire from the Japanese submarine I-8 commanded by the notorious Capt. Ariizumi. Despite his appalling record of war crimes, she sank with no loss of life and the crew spared the grisly fates other merchant crews had met. As it transpired, the City of Adelaide was Ellerman's last loss of the War.
