TWENTY-THREE YEARS LATER LORD NELSON DEFENDS HIS FRIEND: COLONEL DESPARD STANDS ACCUSED OF HIGH TREASON
Nelson says in the Court to the Lord Chief Justice that he and the prisoner were on the same spot together in Jamaica on an expedition, and had shared together the fortune of war, and made up their bed together, and slept in their clothes on the ground together, and had examined the enemy's walls; on all these occasions the prisoner had conducted himself with a steady and determined courage and no man could show more zeal and attachment to his Sovereign and his Country.
The Trial, including other defendants and Despard's address after being found guilty takes up 412cm. of column space (over 3 pages), in a complete issue of The Edinburgh Advertiser, for 15th of February, 1803.
