[M] A BUST OF LORD NELSON CARVED FROM VICTORY...

A BUST OF LORD NELSON CARVED FROM VICTORY TIMBER
possibly 1905, carved from the solid and inscribed NELSON / OAK FROM THE VICTORY -- 22in. (56cm.) high

Timber has been removed from Victory on a regular basis since Trafalgar so dating this unusual bust is not easy. Stylistically it could be between 1890 and 1920, and why the 'S' in Nelson has been inverted remains another mystery. The timber is very dense and dark, and the left side and rear have been left in a rough, unfinished state, the front and rear both having remnant 'trenails' (wooden pegs) visible.

Provenance: Edward, Lord Sackville-West to Eardley Knollys (National Trust), to vendor.

Sold for £1,984
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,800

(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)
