facing left and wearing cocked hat, wig, stock and uniform coat, and mounted in an ebonised oval frame, inscribed on verso Wm Limberly / Lieut R N /27"' April / 1781. and in a second hand For my niece Maria Rains 7th May '74 / Sarah Rains -- 4 x 3in. (10 x 7.5cm.) together with a small print of Nelson after Hoppner, framed and glazed

Lt. William Limberly is recorded as being promoted Lieutenant on 28th April 1781 and retiring a superannuated commander on 1st January 1816. He died on 3rd October 1840.
