H.M.S. Edinburgh, a light cruiser of the 'Belfast' class, was commissioned in July 1939. She saw a great deal of combat service in WWII and ran many escort duties in the North Sea and the Arctic Sea. Edinburgh met an unfortunate end in 1942, torpedoed by the German destroyer Z24 as she was carrying gold which was a part of Russia's war payments to the US and the UK.
