Lady Violet Mary Baring was born on 17 December 1911, the younger daughter of Rowland Thomas Baring, 2nd Earl of Cromer. On 28 January 1937, at the age of twenty-five, she married Major Mervyn Sydney Bobus Vernon, M.V.O. (1912-1991). In the 1947 Lloyd's Register of Yachts he is listed as being a member of the R.Y.S. and owning Varuna.
