comprising twenty-four autograph letters written in a fair-florid hand, many written to his sister Margaret and other family members and giving an animated report of his life in the navy and of what he sees or hears about war with France: We have arrived here after a Cruise of 4 Months off the Coast of Spain, Havin{g} taken 4 Prizes of which one is a recaptured East Indiaman called The Lord Nelson...; his views on Napoleon: Bonaparte is not so fond of Smiling English Powder and Shot as Many people suppose... he has a great number of dangers to encounter before he can get a footing on british land...; his postings, professional hopes, the patronage of the Duke of Northumberland, prize money matters and other naval news and gossip etc; together with a quantity of other family letters on miscellaneous matters including five autograph letters of encouragement by the Duke of Northumberland; one by Lord Melville; and one by E.R. Pickering recording an Umfreville sword, approximately 100 pages, remains of seals and postal marks, broadly 1798-1820
