[M] H.M.S. RENOWN: THE DUKE OF YORK'S ROYAL...

H.M.S. RENOWN: THE DUKE OF YORK'S ROYAL STANDARD FROM HIS CRUISE TO AUSTRALIA, 1927
constructed from six horizontal bunting panels with applied heraldic decoration, canvas sleeve, lanyard with peg and label inscribed HRH D of YORK / 1927 HMS Renown / Royal Standard / Main Mast -- 9 x 17ft. (275 x 518cm.)

The battlecruiser Renown, 26,500 tons, was laid down in 1915, built in a remarkable twenty months and completed in September 1916 as the fastest capital ship of her day. Capable of 32½ knots under full steam and impressively armed with 6-15in. guns, she proved a hugely valuable addition to the fleet during the Great War. She was then selected to convey the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII and latterly Duke of Windsor) on three overseas tours between 1919 and 1921 and so was a logical choice to undertake the same task for his younger brother Prince Albert ("Bertie", Duke of York, who on his brother's abdication became King George VI) on his successful state visit to Australia between January and July 1927 when this Standard was flown.

Sold for £3,472
Estimated at £800 - £1,200
