[M] Elgar, F. & Mitchell, W.F., The Royal Navy,...

Elgar, F. & Mitchell, W.F., The Royal Navy, Illustrated by a Series of Portraits of H.M. Ships from Original Drawings by W.F. Mitchell, Esq., Griffin & Co., Portsmouth, 1885
containing text (by Francis Elgar) and 48 coloured lithographs, each with separate page of descriptive text, large format (29 x 22½cms.), some foxing throughout, particularly on the preliminary pages, but the plates generally good, silk endpapers and original full red morocco, title gold-blocked on front board with decorative ship motif, spine with raised bands etc., joints a little loose but otherwise an attractive copy of this rare work

This splendid book was originally produced in two separate volumes (various editions) between 1872 and 1881. The only 'combined' edition (of 1885), offered here, is widely regarded as a significant rarity and only appears for sale very infrequently; the last copy available in commerce was sold for £1,200 in 2005.

Sold for £744
Estimated at £600 - £800
