[M] A STERN MODEL FOR A "PROPELLING RUDDER" SYSTEM BY FRANCIS RONALDS, CIRCA 1859

A STERN MODEL FOR A "PROPELLING RUDDER" SYSTEM BY FRANCIS RONALDS, CIRCA 1859

laminated and carved with ebonised topsides, the swivelling flat-ended four-bladed brass propeller flanked and enclosed by three pairs of rudders on brass brackets, the side pair with deck levers, removable deck section, secured to wooden cradle stand -- 9½ x 13 x 9in. (24 x 33 x 23cm.)

English inventor Francis Ronalds (1788-1873) described what he called a “Propelling Rudder” in 1859 that combined the propulsion and steering mechanisms of a boat in a single apparatus. The propeller was placed in a frame having an outer profile similar to a rudder and attached to a vertical shaft that allowed the device to rotate in plane while spin was transmitted to the propeller.
