AN OFFICER'S MESS PLATE RECOVERED FROM THE IMPERIAL GERMAN BATTLECRUISER HINDENBURG, CIRCA 1914-18

with Imperial Eagle crest to top, the rim lined with black and gold, impressed maker's marks to reverse (2in. crack and chip at 9 o'clock)

9½in. (24cm.) diameter

A late product of the Wilhelmshaven yard, Hindenburg was launched in 1915 but not completed until late 1917. Scuttled with the rest of the German Fleet in 1919, she was raised in 1930 and was still of sufficient interest to merit a detailed examination by the Royal Corps of Naval Construction.
